The Department of Ruminant Science conducts applied and basic research aiming at dealing with local and worldwide challenges to provide high quality agricultural products from livestock. We develop and investigate new strategies to improve the production, welfare and health of ruminants in changing climate conditions.

The research in the department deals with improving the ability of small and large ruminants to handle metabolic and climatic challenges, using advanced lab methods and complex in vivo settings, along with tissues and cell culture techniques. The department has research groups working on nutrition, fertility, physiology, metabolism, microbiome and genetics of cattle and sheep. We also research novel developments related to the cultured meat industry.

The experiments are conducted at the experimental dairy, beef and sheep farms, as well as in commercial farms, and in specialized laboratories that are experts in utilizing genomic editing, cell culture manipulations, omics, and big data analysis.

The Department goals are dealing with local and worldwide challenges to provide high quality agricultural products from livestock. We develop and investigate new strategies to improve the production, welfare and health of ruminants in changing climate conditions.
