Metabolomics Center

Vision and goals

The Metabolomics center’s goals are to develop advanced analytical methods and implementation of tools and software using a variety of MS- based technologies. These methods allow identification of a variety of natural products in different tissues. The Metabolomics center performs identification and quantification of metabolites, mainly secondary metabolites

Activities and accomplishments

The Metabolomocis center specializes in separation and identification of Metabolites. The repertoire of capabilities includes identification of known and unknown metabolites based on accurate mass (UPLC-Oribtap-MS), quantification of metabolites, including plant hormones such as JA, SA ,ABA, Cytokinins, Auxins, Gibberellins , Antioxidants such as Polyphenols, plant toxins such as Furanocoumarins, Pigments, Flavorings and more using triple-quad based MS (UPLC-Triple Quadrupole-MS), as well as identification and quantification of volatile metabolites using HS-SPME/GC-MS. The Metabolomics center functions in collaboration with many research groups in the ARO and outside it- in diverse projects and is equipped to address most questions related to identification and quantification of small molecules. The Metabolomics center is a major partner in dozens of scientific publications.

Equipment

UPLC-Orbitrap-MS/MS (Orbitap Exploris 120)

Ultra performance Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) combines the physical separation capabilities of liquid chromatography with the mass analysis capabilities of mass spectrometry (MS). This high resolution mass spectrometry provides structural identity of the individual components with high molecular specificity and detection sensitivity, Therefore, may be applied for identification in a wide range of sectors including biotechnology, environment monitoring, food processing, and pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and cosmetic industries.

UPLC-Triple Quadrupole-MS/MS (Waters Xevo TQ MS, Masslynx SW)

Ultra performance Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) combines the physical separation capabilities of liquid chromatography with the mass analysis capabilities of triple Quadropole mass spectrometry (MS). This instrument is wiedly used to advance the field of plant metabolomics, especially for profiling of secondary metabolites in plants, and for quantitation analysis of natural products (in ppb levels).

GC-MS (Agilent GC-7890A, MS- 5975C, CTC PAL Injector, MassHunter SW)

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) combines the features of gas-chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify different substance (volatile or “made volatile”) . Applications of GC-MS include drug detection, fire investigation, environmental analysis, explosives investigation, and identification and quantitation of material samples obtained from planet.
