The Kleiman lab – On the interface of materials and biology is looking for a Doctorate for “Uncovering the role of physical elements in plant-environment interactions using biomimetic” research 馃尵

The research in the lab is at the interface of material sciences and biology, where we use biomimetics to understand biological mechanisms, specifically in plant-environment interaction. We develop synthetic systems that mimic different physical elements of the plant, such as surface microstructure. We use these systems to better understand how those physical elements influence plant-environment interactions. For instance, we develop systems that mimic the microstructure and material properties of leaves and roots to learn how these properties affect distribution and penetration of different pets including bacteria, fungi and nematodes. We also develop cell culture media with different material properties that influence the plant developmental process on said media.

Requirements: Preferred background in material sciences/chemistry/biomedical sciences. Background in biology is also possible. Capability for multidisciplinary research.

You will get experience with: Developing materials systems from natural and synthetic polymers to form surfaces and media. Characterization methods for materials such as advanced microscopy, AFM, TA, rheology and more. Methods to generate micro and nano structures such as lithography. Biological work specifically, microbiology and plant tissue culture.
