We are exploring the chemical and genetic foundations of the herbs we know and love. The primary goal of the proposed study is to identify the key volatile compounds that define the scent we recognize as “basil” aroma and to understand the genetic pathways involved in their production. A critical aspect of our study involves identifying undesirable aroma notes in the scent profile. Our aim is to eliminate these unwanted aromas during the breeding of new varieties, a common challenge when introducing disease resistance from hybrid lines that may possess suboptimal olfactory qualities. Our research employs an interdisciplinary approach, utilizing advanced methods in chemistry, biochemistry, genetics and genomics.
Requirements: High level of commitment and dedication, proactive mindset and the ability to take initiative, strong ability to learn and work independently.
You will get experience with: GCMS and GCMS-Olfactometer (sniffer).
