Today, more than half of Earth’s population lives in cities. The urbanization process is accelerating and the agriculture is losing a significant workforce. This process puts various agricultural areas in existential risk in Israel as well. One of the significant ways to bridge the gap between the demand for skilled personnel in agriculture and the existing number of employees is through research and development of advanced engineering technologies.
The Institute of Agricultural Engineering has about 15 research groups that include researchers, engineers and graduate students with advanced degrees in the various fields of engineering.

The main research areas at the institute are: precision agriculture in plants and animals, aquaculture engineering, application of pest control methods, greenhouse engineering, environmental and energy engineering, production engineering, artificial intelligence and data science, remote and proximal sensing, robotics and drones, nanotechnology and biosensors, livestock engineering and postharvest engineering. The Institute of Agricultural Engineering is the only institution in Israel engaged in engineering research and development in various fields of agriculture.

The Institute works to promote Israeli agriculture and its related industry, while formulating advanced technological and engineering solutions in each of the stages of agricultural production at all levels of research and development, starting with fundamental research through the investigation of information from the country and the world, and ending with the development and application of technologies, agricultural tools and work methods for specific purposes. The Institute of Agricultural Engineering is a significant driving force in the introduction of production processes and methods, sensors of various types, data clouds applications, use of robotic equipment and drones to farms in Israel, which today are hard to imagine without these means.
