Biography
Dr. Roi Ben-David, Department of Vegetables and Field Crops. Roi Ben-David has MSc in filed crops from Hebrew University and PhD in plant genetics from Institute of evolution in Haifa. After completing a postdoctoral studies in cereal host-pathogen genetics in Zurich University in 2012 he have joined research scientist in the Institute of plant science at Agricultural Research Organization, the Volcani Center.
Dr. Ben-David have more than 20 years’ experience in crop research. For the last 11 years Dr. Ben-David have lead the ARO winter cereal-breeding program. That’s include a sabbatical at CIMMYT which is the world leading institute for wheat breeding. During Dr. Ben-David years as PI in ARO Volcani institute have lead as PI over 15 research projects focusing on wheat crop genetics and winter cereals productivity under Mediterranean climate. Supervised and guided >10 M.Sc. and PhD students.

Research Interests
Dr. Ben-David research group is focused on wheat research and breeding that combine both field studies and advanced genomic breeding tools. The lab focused on the genetic makeup of yield, biomass productivity and other agronomic traits that could be test directly in the field. Research products are in many cases pre-breeding materials, which is streamed directly to our breeding program. Roi also run a breeding program of winter cereals which focus mainly on bread wheat, but also includes durum wheat, emmer wheat, spelt, barley, triticale and oat.
Research Areas
- Improvement of coleoptile length and early vigor in wheat
- Comparative analysis of yield and feeding value of winter cereals forage in Mediterranean Environment under different agronomic practices
- Breeding Spelt wheat for Mediterranean growing conditions
- Comparative genetic and phenotypic analysis of landraces vs. modern Barley varieties
- Genetic mapping of lodging resistance in wheat
