Research Interests
Since I have joined Volcani Center in 1993, my research has focused on viral resistance in vegetable crops. The research includes screening for viral resistances in wild-type plants, introgression of the desired trait into domesticated plants, breeding for viral resistance, as well as research aimed at understanding the genetic and molecular control of the resistant traits. A main emphasis of my research is development of viral-resistance in tomato crop, especially Tomato yellow leaf curl geminivirus (TYLCV) – we have identified a new TYLCV-resistant locus called ty-5, mapped it and identified the gene controlling the resistance.
In recent years, upon the appearance of Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV), we have developed a tomato genotype exhibiting very high level of ToBRFV-resistance, we identified and mapped two loci responsible for the resistance, and recently identified a gene responsible for the resistance in one of the loci.
