The Fruit Tree Ecophysiology Lab seeks a Doctorate for a Physiology of deciduous fruit trees under climate change research ๐Ÿ‹

Interested in plant physiology, climate change, and real-world agriculture? Our lab explores how fruit trees cope with environmental stress, focusing on water relations in apple orchards under heat and drought conditions. We combine field experiments, advanced sensors, and physiological tools to understand tree function and improve yield and resilience. We also develop custom sensors for field-based monitoring of tree performance. Our work bridges fundamental plant science with applied agriculture, including optimizing cultivarโ€“rootstock combinations and developing innovative solutions like dynamic shading and precision irrigation.

Requirements: – MSc in plant sciences, agriculture, biology, or a related field – Background in plant physiology / ecophysiology / plant water relations โ€“ a strong advantage – Previous research experience (experimental design and execution, data analysis, scientific writing) – Ability to work independently and lead a research project – Technical orientation and interest in developing and using sensor technologies – Advantage: experience in programming and data analysis (R / Python) ** The work combines field experiments, advanced physiological measurements, and data analysis ** Suitable for students interested in leading independent research on plant physiology and climate stress

students will get experience with: Plant physiology and ecophysiology, with a focus on water relations and climate stress Hands-on experience with advanced instruments: porometer (stomatal conductance), water potential measurements, and sap flow sensors Use of sensor systems for continuous field monitoring and development of custom sensors Histological techniques, microscopy, and advanced methods for plant organ characterization Design and execution of field experiments, and data analysis (R / Python)
