Nowadays, monitoring and controlling the production and behaviour of animals is primarily done on a group level.
The ability to collect and process real-time data during the period of animal growth, and to individually care for all of the animals on a farm without delay, enables significant improvement in the animals' welfare, health, and production; and consequently in the management of the entire farm.
For example, early detection alerting the farm's staff that a goat/lamb/sheep is not drinking and its weight does not comply with a predefined mathematical model, enables immediate decisions about treatment of the herd, i.e. actions directed at group: change in feeding, grazing management, group handling, preventive vaccinations; or individual care for the specific animal, such as separating him/her from other animals disturbing him/her, and then a closer veterinary examination.
The main incentives for installing a PLF system is a general improvement of the farm's outputs, including improvement in animal health and welfare; and significant savings in labour and often cost.
