Aims:

- To improve the quality and yield of vegetable, field and herbal crops for fresh market consumption, industrial use and for the extraction of natural health-promoting metabolites.
- To improve the resistance of vegetable, field and herbal crops to biotic and abiotic stresses.
- To increase and utilize the genetic diversity of vegetable, field, and herbal crops.
- To become a professional authority in genetics and physiology of vegetable, field and herbal crops.
- To train future generations of whole-plant breeders and researchers.

Objectives

- Improving fruit, tuber and grain quality and development.
- Improving resistance of vegetable, field and herbal crops to biotic and abiotic stresses.
- Development of grafting procedures in vegetable crops.
- Development of vegetable production systems in the open field and in protected environment.
- Development of field-crop production systems.

Activities

The areas of research in the department range from applied breeding and agro-technical improvement programs to basic physiological, molecular and biotechnological research relating to the advancement of vegetable and field crops. The research in the department focuses on the major export vegetable crops of Israel, including the solanaceous tomato, pepper, paprika and potato; the cucurbitaceous melons, watermelons, squash and pumpkins; the field crops wheat, chickpea, barley and peanuts; herbs and spices; as well as strawberry, potato and sweet potato.


The Department of Vegetable Research also includes the Israel Gene Bank which is responsible for collection, preservation and evaluation of plant species indigenous to Israel including landraces and primitive cultivars.

Kleiman Maya, Ph.D. Our lab works on the interface between material sciences and biology. We use synthetic materials to both mimic and gain insight over biological systems. Our main interest lies in the surface microstructure of plants and the effect it has on plant-environment interaction. Main projects include: - Synthetic replicas of tomato leaf surface microstructure under different conditions that vary the microstructure. Examination of how those changes influence the leaf interaction with different tomato pathogens. - Synthetic replicas of tomato root surface in a three dimensional manner as well as combination of different structures with different chemicals extracted from the root. This system is a platform to separate the physical effect from the chemical effect in the root-pathogen interaction. - Studying the influence of the three dimensional arrangement of the cells on the plant's regeneration potential.

Gafni Yedidya, Prof. The research in my laboratory is aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in the interactions between the Tomato yellow leaf curl virus and the host plant cell. Recently we discovered the suppression of gene silencing activity of the V2 protein of the virus. The understanding of the mechanism(s) by which V2 interferes with the silencing machinery of the host plant cell is now under investigation.
