The Institute of Plant Sciences is Israel's largest research organization in the broad fields of plant biology, agro-technology, and agro-environmental issues.

Scope and mission

The Institute of Plant Sciences is a center for research, development and application of products and technologies related to both plant cultivation and open-range management(please see our institutional presentation). The institute is also active in educating and training the new generation of scientists in these areas. Specific goals include:

  • improving the quality of life and well-being of the Israeli consumer with respect to agricultural produce and utilization of open spaces;
  • improving the quality and competitiveness of Israeli agro-products in the world market;
  • improving management of open spaces in Israel for the benefit of the public.

Research objectives


  • Crop, flower, fruit,  and vegetable production under environmental stress
  • Irrigation with saline and recycled water 
  •  Protection from physiological disorders
  • CO2 enrichment in greenhouses
  • Photo-selective screening of solar radiation for production  of ornamental, fruit and vegetable crops
  • Introduction of new crops

  • Vegetables
  • Medicinal and aromatic crops
  • New ornamentals
  • Breeding

  • Developing genetic tools for breeding programs
  • Mapping and genetic markers
  • Breeding programs for citrus, avocado, mango, pomegranate, olive, apricot and fig, flowers-Ornitugalum,Hippeastrum, herbs ( basil, others)
  • Functional genomics:

  • Quality, color, aroma
  • Size and shape
  • Flavor
  • Contents of sugars, vitamins, organic acids, and anti-oxidants
  • Natural resources and open spaces

  • Improving  management, with emphasis on sustainability
  • Improving the productivity of rangelands and  grazing livestock
  • Long-term management. Stabilization and reclamation of open and afforested spaces
  • Development of agro-tourism
