Research Interests / Job description
(Emeritus) (1) Cellular and molecular basis for abiotic stress tolerance and stress responses, with emphasis on salinity, drought and oxidative stress.

(2) Biotechnological means to increase tolerance to these stresses
Current Research Objectives:
  1. Comparative study of gene expression under salt and oxidative stresses in salt-sensitive and salt-tolerant cultured citrus cells.
  2. Salt-induced expression of lipoxygenase.
  3. Regulation of citrus phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase gene and protein and its promoter analysis*.

Summary of Current and Future Research:

The research is conducted in two main directions: one is concerned with the gene csa and its encoded protein phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase, and the other is aimed at elucidation of the role of lipid metabolism in salt tolerance.

We have isolated the promoter of csa fused it to GUS as a reporter gene and used it for transformation of cultured tobacco cells as well as tobacco plants. In addition, we prepared two deletion constructs of the promoter and we are currently quantifying the expression of GUS under various stress conditions, and trying to identify promoter regions required for its expression.

We characterized a 9-lipoxygenase activity in citrus cells, which is transiently induced by salt. We are currently studying the expression of the protein and its relation to salt tolerance.

We have found salt-induced changes in the degree of fatty acid unsaturation in salt-tolerant cells only, and we are currently trying to find out its relationship to salt stress and salt-tolerance.*
